Privacy Policy

Yap is a journal, so it holds personal information. This policy explains what Yap collects, why it is used and which services help process it. We don't sell your data or use your journal for advertising.

What we collect

• Journal content. When you speak, speech recognition creates a transcript. Yap stores the transcript and the tasks, habits, mood, daily note and facts about people that are inferred from it. This content is stored in your account so the app can show it back to you, keep it backed up and include it in your journal export.
• Account information. Yap automatically creates an anonymous account and account identifier. We store the name you enter during onboarding. If you choose to back up your journal with Apple, we also store the name and email address Apple shares with us.
• Usage and diagnostic information. Yap uses PostHog to understand which screens and features are used, measure performance and investigate errors. These events are linked to your anonymous account identifier but do not include your transcript or journal entries.
• Technical information. Our servers receive information such as your IP address and user agent when the app connects. We use it to maintain your session, protect accounts and operate the service.

Speech recognition

Yap uses Apple's speech recognition service to turn your speech into text. Depending on your device and iOS version, Apple may process speech recognition on the device or through its service. Yap does not upload or store your audio on its servers and does not send audio to OpenRouter or Microsoft Azure.

AI processing

To organise your journal, Yap sends your transcript through OpenRouter to Microsoft Azure. The transcript is used only to infer journal content and return it to Yap. We restrict every request to zero data retention endpoints and deny provider data collection. OpenRouter and Microsoft Azure do not retain your transcript after processing or use it to train AI models.

Service providers

Yap uses Apple for speech recognition and optional Sign in with Apple, OpenRouter and Microsoft Azure for AI processing and PostHog for usage analytics and diagnostics. Service providers that receive personal data from Yap are required to use it only to provide their service and give it the same or equivalent protection described in this policy.

What we don't do

• We don't sell your data.
• We don't show ads or share your journal with advertisers.
• We don't use your journal to train AI models.
• We don't read your entries unless you explicitly share something with us for support or we need to investigate abuse or comply with the law.

Retention, export and deletion

Your account and journal content are kept until you delete them. You can delete individual entries, export your journal or delete your account from Settings. Deleting your account removes your transcripts and extracted content from our servers. Usage and diagnostic information is kept only as long as needed to understand the product and operate the service, then deleted or anonymised.

You can withdraw permission for future speech recognition and AI processing by turning off microphone or speech recognition access in iOS Settings. Yap cannot create new spoken journal entries without those permissions. You can also email us to request deletion.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that matters, we'll say so in the app before the change takes effect. The date at the top always reflects the latest revision.
